South America by the Numbers

We are ending our time in South America and Sandy summarizes some trip statistics, as well as country information, for the six nations that we visited.

Our next installment of “By the Numbers” looks at our time in South America. We kept track of some statistics and fun measures during our 11 weeks of travel there:

Number of Days in South America:82
Number of Countries Visited:6 + 1 Territory (French Guiana)
Number of National Parks / Reserves Visited:4
Miles Traveled by Boat:5,952

Miles Traveled by Air:2,211

During our time in South America we traveled from the rainforest of the Brazilian Amazon to the glaciers of Patagonia in Argentina and Chile. In between we visited cultural sites, from the Jesuit estancias outside of Cordoba, Argentina, to the 9,000 year old Cave of the Hands near Perito Moreno, Argentina. We also went to Devil’s Island in French Guiana and large cities in Peru and Ecuador.

We participated in a variety of activities as we journeyed primarily by bus through this continent. We walked on beaches in Uruguay, rode on horseback in the foothills of the Andes in Bariloche, Argentina, and trekked on the Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia, Argentina. A three-day ferry trip through the Chilean fjords also provided us with a different perspective on South America.

We trekked in two national parks and in a reserve in the Amazon basin, seeing some amazing scenery and wildlife in the process. To provide a little more in-depth look at each country, we have created a table listing:

  • Population (and world rank)
  • Area (and world rank)
  • Life Expectancy at Birth in Years (and world rank)
  • GDP Per Capita – PPP (and world rank)
  • Median Age in Years
  • Literacy Rate percentage
  • Access to Electricity (%) and Population without Electricity
  • Big Mac Index (to learn more about this measure, click here)

Sources for each item are listed. Click the image below to view the detailed table.
